AI platform · Gemini

Gemini answers from Google's index and its own model. Does it name you?

Gemini answers from its training and, when it grounds an answer, from Google Search results. We measure which companies it names for your buyers' questions, and how that differs from Google's AI results.

How it builds an answer

How Gemini decides who to name.

Gemini draws on Google's understanding of entities, and on Google Search when it grounds an answer, so work that makes you retrievable on Google usually carries over. The answer format differs: fewer links and more synthesis, so a company that is not clearly described as an entity is easily left out.

What it draws on

  • Training data
  • Google Search results, when an answer is grounded
  • Google's Knowledge Graph of entities
  • Files and links the user provides

What we measure

The same five measures, on Gemini.

Calculated per query, for you and every competitor in the set, so Gemini can be compared with every other platform.

Answer share

Of n answers to the same query, the number that name you. AI answers vary from run to run, so one answer proves nothing.

answer share = k / n

Share of voice

Your mentions as a proportion of all mentions across the competitor set, for the same queries.

SoV = mᵧ / Σ mᵢ

Query coverage

The proportion of the query set, from problem to selection, in which you are named at least once.

coverage = |Q named| / |Q|

Citation coverage

Of the sources the answers cite, the proportion that mention you. AI systems repeat what their sources say.

citations naming you / citations

Retrieval margin

How closely your best passage matches the query, scored with our own embedding model, against the best competing passage. A negative margin usually explains why you were left out.

cos(q, pᵧ) − max cos(q, pᵢ)

Common questions

Is Gemini the same as Google's AI Overviews?

No. They share Google's index and entity understanding, but they are separate products with different answer formats. We measure them separately because a company can appear in one and not the other.

What does Google-Extended control?

It is a robots.txt token that controls whether your content is used to train Gemini models and to ground Gemini answers. It does not affect Google Search or AI Overviews.

Why does Gemini describe our company wrongly?

Usually because sources disagree about your services, locations or name, or leave facts to inference. Gemini repeats the version it can resolve. Entity work makes one version explicit and consistent.
